Everybody said the war would be over by Christmas. Younger men worried it would not last long enough for them to reach volunteering age. To be called up on the first day and be those they needed right away was something many envied.

Among the people gathered on Barnoldswick Station to see the fifteen off to Chatham, was thirteen year old Maurice Daly. His dad was one of the two corporals in the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and Maurice was very proud of him. Even though there were two sister’s older than himself, he was the older boy and would be the “man of the house” while his father was away.
