Whitby Lifeboat Museum

The large presentation case below is located inside Whitby Lifeboat Museum, Pier Road. The museum was founded in 1958 by Mr. Eric Thomson, who was at that time the Honorary Secretary for Whitby Lifeboat. Mr. thomson enjoyed an impressive record with the station serving as the Hon. Sec. between 1948 and 1974. He was presented with the RNLI Silver badge in 1963 and the RNLI Gold Badge in 1974. He also served as the President of the branch from 1074 until 1980 and was made an Honorary Life Governor of the Institution in 1983.

Today, Peter Thomson (Eric's son) is the present lifeboat museum curator, the front of the museum houses a very profitable RNLI shop run by Peter's Alison. Eric left a lasting legacy with the lifeboat museum and although it has undergone numerous revamps over the years, it has to be said that without Mr. Eric Thomson's foresight the lifeboat would have struggled to display the huge maritime history it has. The Rohilla is well served within the lifeboat museum and it would simply not be so without the generous donations of many exquisite artifacts from the former hospital vessel.
